Winged Bean
(Psophocarpus tetragonolobus)
Fabaceae family
The winged bean is a perennial legume of local importance in Southeast Asia and New Guinea. The entire plant can be consumed: pods, beans, leaves, as well as its edible tuber. It is a rich source of protein, but has been stigmatized in some areas as a "poor-person's food". In addition, as a legume it fixes nitrogen. These properties make it a potentially valuable crop far beyond its current range, throughout the humid tropics.
