Tangerine or Mandarin

(Citrus reticulata)

Rutaceae family

Tangerines are highly-prized in China, where they have been cultivated since the first millennium B.C. They are very cold hardy for citrus fruits. They did not gain popularity outside of the Orient until this century. The tangerine hybridized with the pummelo (C. grandis) to give rise to the orange. They have also been hybridized with the grapefruit (C. paradisi) to give rise to the tangelo.
