Pistachio

(Pistacia vera)

Anacardiaceae family

Pistachio is a deciduous tree native to Asia and the Mediterranean. The species is dioecious, and the nut-fruit is a drupe. Pistachios are usually propagated via grafting of P. vera scions onto P. atlantica, P. integerrima, P. terebinthus, or hybrid rootstocks. California is a major world producer. Pistachios are also grown in Iran ("pistachio" is derived from Persian "pista"). Pistachios are in the same family as tropical cashews and mangoes.
