Peanut is a tetraploid legume (2n=4x=40) and is native to the Gran Chaco and Andes foothills of Bolivia/Argentina/Paraguay. Peanuts were domesticated from wild A. monticola in the Peruvian coastal desert around 2000 B.C. They have become an especially important food source in Africa. Peanuts are notorious for harboring carcinogenic aflatoxin fungus.
