Lemon arose via hybridization between the citron (C. medica) and the lime (C. aurantifolia). Lemons are thought to be native to India. Along with oranges, they are a popular orchard crop in the warm subtropics, where frost is only a minimal threat. California, Florida, and the Mediterranean are leading lemon-producing regions.
