Blueberry (Highbush)

(Vaccinium corymbosum)

Ericaceae family

Blueberries are native to North America, and are commonly grown in the northeastern U.S. A related species, lowbush blueberry (V. angustifolium), is found in drier locations than the bog-loving highbush blueberry. They are both closely related to cranberries. Blueberries can be propagated sexually or via a number of asexual methods, including grafting, leaf-bud or hardwood cuttings. In nature, the seeds are dispersed through the droppings of birds. Both lowbush and highbush blueberries are tetraploids, 2n=4x=48, and hybrids between them and including a related species, V. australe, are common.
